Task List
Studies CAD drawings, blueprints, sketches, hand drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece. Applies knowledge of standard shop practice, theory and procedures, shop mathematics, and machinability of materials to achieve product outcomes. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit CNC machines. Observes machine operation to verify accuracy of machine settings and to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, using precision measuring instruments such as micrometer and dial caliper. Adjusts machine to control part process. Set up process plan (sequence of operations) to achieve successful part completion. Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines to fabricate any machinable materials. Verifies "first article inspection" using appropriate measuring instruments. Develop numerical program using canned cycles, CNC conversational, and/or offline CAD/CAM programming. Selects appropriate cuffing tools required for various operations to ensure functionality and performance of the machining process. Design CNC part programs per drawing and material requirements to achieve sequence of operations and setup requirements. Inspects cuffing tools for sharpness and usability. Works safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following all safety regulations. Based on condition of raw goods, selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cuffing tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes and grinders. Confers with customers (engineers and designers or others) to prevent or resolve machining or assembly problems. Post edits CNC program to fine tune process for optimum performance. Confers with others to troubleshoot manufacturing problems and perform quality assurance checks. Supervises small project teams to complete larger project jobs. Calibrates machine tools using hardware and software adjustments. Consults with purchasing, management, and vendors to determine the specifications of raw goods. Fits and assembles machined parts into complete assembly, using standard measuring instruments, hand tools, and power tools. Verifies and calibrates measuring instruments to standards. Troubleshoots production problems by reading equipment manuals, and industry trade standards manuals.
